Inspired Materials :: Terazzo

Most people think of the flooring in their high school lunch room when someone mentions "terrazzo."  But its been around since, well, 8,000 BC!  For real!

The process involves any sort of stone or glass chip held in place by resin or concrete like material.  Venetial workers used to take the chips and dust from wealthy clientele and use it in their own homes with terazzo flooring.  Neat.

Fast forward to now, and the flooring has become a luxury- its very laborious to grind and polish the flooring down once its been set.  Early reports from Milan's Furniture Fair reveal the material is catching the eyes of the new design set.

Check out these spaces that have used terazzo to great effect.  Including Alexis Stewart's massive NYC apartment- she had the flooring installed- even stairs cast.
