Inspired Architects :: Vincent Van Duysen

Duysen is one of those designers whose spaces make me hold my breath for a moment- and it of course reminds me of my favorite hotel in the architect's home turf.  (Hotel Julien)  The Belgian architect is the go-to for Julianne Moore's own homes.

These spaces represent my ultimate minimalism fantasies.  Those waxed & bleached wide plank oak floors, the steel frame room dividers, the absence of synthetic materials...  Walking into these spaces your blood pressure drops.  You instantly relax.  Your happiness quotient skyrockets.  You get to focus on the people around you, or the book you're reading, or the music on the playlist.

Inspired Spaces :: Comfortable Minimalism in Antwerp

For the second year after leaving Paris in the fall, Antwerp's Hotel Julien has provided the perfect space to unwind, collect my thoughts, and be inspired by the utter minimalism of Belgian interiors.     Two interior courtyards add to the visual serenity of the common areas- as do the floor to ceiling steel windows.   Waxed oak floors contrast with the matte finish mouldings on the ceilings.  Eames chairs sit alongside antique Bergeres upholstered in [Belgian] linen.   The rooms and suites are a study white and naturals.  The bathrooms alone are worth an extra nights stay to take advantage of the freestanding tub and deep walk-in showers.  Honed white marbles accent the space and lighting is superbly moody.
